About this position

Chalmers University of Technology is seeking a Doctoral student in computational hydrodynamics of marine propulsion systems within the Division of Marine Technology and the Kongsberg University Technology Centre in Computational Hydrodynamics. The project sits at the intersection of marine engineering, fluid dynamics, and advanced numerical simulation, with a strong application focus on the development of next-generation sustainable ship propulsion systems.

The research topic addresses methods to assess cavitation inception, vibrations, and underwater radiated noise during the design phase. This is a complex multiphysics challenge that combines physical understanding, high-fidelity CFD, and potentially machine learning. The successful candidate will work closely with Kongsberg Maritime and contribute to industrial design methodologies for future marine propulsion systems.

The position is based in Gothenburg, Sweden, at the Department of Mechanical Engineering. Chalmers emphasizes sustainable maritime systems, energy-efficient marine technologies, and collaboration with industry. The doctoral student will take advanced courses within the Graduate School of Shipping and Marine Technology or Thermo and Fluid Dynamics, develop independent scientific concepts, and communicate research results in oral and written form. Teaching or other duties may account for up to 10% of working time, and there is a possibility to teach up to 20%, which can extend the appointment.

This is a fully funded doctoral position from the start. The appointment is fixed-term for four years, with the possibility of extension to five years depending on teaching duties. The starting salary is 35,725 SEK per month from 1 May 2026. Doctoral studies require physical presence throughout the study period, and a valid residence permit must be presented by the study start date.

Applicants must have a relevant Master’s degree in fluid dynamics, mechanical engineering, naval architecture, or equivalent; for applicants educated outside Sweden, a four-year Bachelor’s degree is accepted. Strong English communication skills are required, as is experience in CFD, preferably using STAR-CCM+ or OpenFOAM. The application must be submitted in English as PDF files and include a CV, personal letter, a brief introduction and motivation statement, and bachelor’s and, if available, master’s thesis documents with transcripts. The deadline is 15 August 2026.

Full funding including tuition fees and living expenses is available for this position. The scholarship covers all educational costs and provides a monthly stipend.
