About this position
Doctoral student in Numerical simulations of turbulent heat transfer over rough surfaces at Lund University, Faculty of Engineering (LTH), Department of Energy Sciences, Sweden.
This PhD project sits in the Division of Heat Transfer and focuses on the interaction between surface roughness, turbulence, and heat transfer. The work combines fundamental fluid mechanics with engineering applications, and is carried out in close collaboration with industrial and research partners including Siemens Energy AB, Ericsson AB, TRATON AB, and RISE.
The research will rely on high-fidelity computational methods such as Direct Numerical Simulation (DNS) and Large Eddy Simulation (LES), using CFD tools including OpenFOAM, CaNS, and nekRS or comparable scientific-computing frameworks. A major part of the work involves high-performance computing on both GPU- and CPU-based systems, analysis of large simulation datasets, and the development of reduced-order and engineering models for turbulent heat transfer over rough surfaces.
Eligibility and preferred profile: a relevant Master’s degree or equivalent in mechanical engineering, engineering physics, aerospace engineering, energy engineering, applied mathematics, computational science, or a closely related field; strong knowledge of fluid mechanics, CFD, turbulence, and heat transfer; a substantial thesis or research project in CFD/turbulence/heat transfer; proven ability to independently run and analyse simulations; scientific programming skills (C/C++, Fortran, Python, or Matlab); practical HPC experience; and excellent English. Experience with DNS/LES, wall-bounded turbulence, roughness effects, parallel computing, GPU-accelerated computing, RANS, or thermal turbulence modelling is an advantage.
The employment is a full-time fixed-term doctoral position. Third-cycle studies normally last 4 years full-time, with possible extension for teaching/departmental duties (up to 20%). The post is based in Lund, and the work may include travel for meetings, workshops, conferences, and partner visits.
Application documents should be written in English and include a CV, cover letter, degree certificates, transcripts, thesis document or thesis summary, other supporting research material, and contact information for at least two references. Apply through the university portal by 2026-11-29.

What's required
Applicants must meet general third-cycle admission requirements by holding a second-cycle qualification, completing at least 240 higher-education credits with at least 60 credits at second-cycle level, or having equivalent knowledge. A relevant Master’s degree is required in mechanical engineering, engineering physics, aerospace engineering, energy engineering, applied mathematics, computational science, or a related subject. Applicants should have strong knowledge of fluid mechanics, CFD, turbulent flows, and heat transfer; a substantial research project or thesis in CFD, turbulence, heat transfer, or a closely related area; demonstrated ability to independently set up, run, troubleshoot, validate, and analyse numerical simulations; scientific programming experience in C/C++, Fortran, Python, or Matlab; practical experience with HPC systems; ability to work with limited supervision; and very good spoken and written English. Experience with DNS/LES, wall-bounded turbulence, rough surfaces, convective heat transfer, parallel computing, GPU-accelerated computing, RANS, wall modelling, or thermal turbulence modelling is meriting.
How to apply
Prepare an application in English with a CV, cover letter, degree certificates, transcripts, a copy of the Master’s thesis or thesis summary, any supporting research documents, and contact details for at least two references. Submit via the university application portal before the deadline.
