About this position
Karlstad University invites applications for a doctoral studentship in Computer Science with a specialisation in 6G mobile systems. The position is based in the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science, within the Faculty of Health, Science and Technology. The research focus is on 6G wireless systems, with particular emphasis on large-scale Internet of Things (IoT), non-terrestrial networks (NTN), and the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) for network optimization and autonomous operation.
6G systems are being designed to support massive, heterogeneous, and intelligent connectivity, enabling IoT at extreme scale and integrating terrestrial and non-terrestrial networks such as satellite and aerial platforms. The doctoral research will involve modelling, design, analysis, and validation of data-driven solutions for 6G IoT systems. Topics may include scalable radio access, intelligent resource allocation, orchestration across NTN-integrated networks, and edge-assisted processing for latency- and energy-constrained IoT services. AI and ML techniques will be central to network optimization, traffic prediction, and autonomous operation in large-scale, heterogeneous environments.
The work will be conducted in close collaboration with the Distributed Intelligent Systems and Communications (DISCO) group, a leading research group in mobile communication systems and services. DISCO offers a collaborative, project-centered culture and has strong connections with both academic and industrial partners. The group’s research covers all aspects of mobile communication systems, including innovative solutions for network and computing resource allocation, multi-connectivity, and low-latency services, often applying AI/ML.
As a doctoral student, you will primarily focus on your own studies, with the opportunity to teach or undertake administrative duties up to 20% of full time. The doctoral programme comprises 240 credits for a Degree of Doctor and offers a paid salary in accordance with local collective agreements. The position is fixed-term, initially for one year, with possible extensions up to a maximum of two years at a time. The start date is by agreement.
Entry requirements include a Master’s degree or equivalent in Computer Science or Computer Engineering. Applicants must meet both general and specific entry requirements as outlined in the Higher Education Ordinance. Assessment criteria focus on scientific skills, English language proficiency, competence in data-driven research, and knowledge of wireless communications, mobile networks, statistics, and AI/ML. Experience in practical network measurements and programming with Matlab, Python, and/or C is valued. Personal qualities such as cooperation, judgement, responsibility, commitment, and a positive attitude are important. Applicants with foreign qualifications must provide degree certificates, official transcripts, and a contact for the degree-awarding institution.
Karlstad University values diversity and gender balance and welcomes applicants from all backgrounds. The university has received the European Commission’s HR Excellence in Research award, reflecting its commitment to fair and transparent recruitment and favorable professional development for researchers.
To apply, submit your application via the university’s web-based recruitment tool, Varbi, by the deadline of 13 April 2026. Attach all required documents, including a cover letter, CV, degree certificate, transcript, Master’s thesis, publications, letters of recommendation, and references. Name each uploaded document clearly. Documents not submitted electronically should be sent to Karlstads universitet, Hanna Ljungdahl, 651 88 KARLSTAD, SWEDEN. State the reference number REK2025/231.
