About this position
Chalmers University of Technology invites applications for a fully funded doctoral student position in Electrical Engineering, focusing on neuroprosthetics and neuromorphic brain–computer interfaces. The research group, led by Assistant Professor Giacomo Valle, is part of the Division of Biomedical Signals and Systems within the Department of Electrical Engineering. The team is interdisciplinary and international, working at the intersection of neuroscience, engineering, and clinical translation, with a strong emphasis on neural interfaces, sensory restoration, and bio-inspired computation. The research project aims to develop next-generation neuroprosthetic systems by combining invasive neural recording and stimulation in humans with neuromorphic processing for brain–computer interfaces. The work involves designing closed-loop systems to restore sensory and motor function, integrating real-time neural decoding with low-power, bio-inspired hardware, and validating these approaches in clinical settings. The project offers opportunities to conduct cutting-edge research, design and implement neural recording and stimulation experiments in humans, and develop real-time signal processing and closed-loop control algorithms.
Applicants must hold a Master’s degree (120 credits) or a Master’s degree (60 credits) in Biomedical Engineering, Neuroscience, or equivalent. For students educated outside Sweden, a 4-year Bachelor’s degree is accepted. Strong written and verbal communication skills in English are required, along with experience in neural signal processing, electrophysiology, or brain–computer interfaces, and programming skills (Python, MATLAB, or similar). Personal competencies such as collaboration, curiosity, and independence in an interdisciplinary environment are essential. Experience with human neural recordings or stimulation, neuromorphic engineering or embedded systems, and machine learning for neural data will strengthen your application.
The position is fully funded from the start, with a fixed-term appointment of four years and the possibility to extend up to five years if teaching duties (up to 20% of working hours) are included. The starting salary is 34,550 SEK per month (valid from May 25, 2025), and doctoral students are considered employees with full benefits. Physical presence in Sweden is required throughout the study period, and a valid residence permit must be presented by the start date.
