About this position

The Laboratory of Food Biochemistry at ETH Zürich is seeking two doctoral students for research projects focused on the chemical characterization and optimization of grain-based foods and food ingredients. The group investigates dietary fibres and associated small molecules, their occurrence, interactions, and properties in foods during processing, storage, and digestion. Ongoing research includes fermentation and the assessment of new raw materials for food use, with an emphasis on developing improved analytical methods. The doctoral projects will explore the health effects, sensory properties, and sustainable use of food ingredients, with flexibility to tailor the research to the candidate's interests and experience.

The position involves producing a dissertation project comprising at least three high-quality papers for top-tier journals, as well as occasional contributions to undergraduate supervision and collaborative research. The successful candidate will benefit from close supervision, a supportive and diverse research team, and access to ETH Zurich’s world-class infrastructure and international collaborations.

The position is fully funded for approximately four years, with annual contract extensions and final admission to the Doctoral Program after a successful Aptitude Colloquium. Applicants must have a Master’s degree in food chemistry, food sciences, organic chemistry, polymer chemistry, or a related discipline, ideally obtained within the last two years. Proficiency in English and a strong academic record are required, along with experience in chemical analysis techniques such as LC-MS, GC-MS, EPR, GC, HPLC, NMR, FT-IR, and measurements of physical properties.

Expertise in food sciences and the food value chain is advantageous. Candidates should demonstrate strong analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills, and the ability to work independently and collaboratively.
