About this position
Doctoral Student in Magnetic Resonance for the Study of Granular Systems at ETH Zurich
This 100% fixed-term PhD position is offered at the Institute for Biomedical Engineering, ETH Zurich, in the research group of Prof. Klaas Prüssmann. The project sits at the intersection of Physics, Biomedical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science, and Mathematics, with a strong emphasis on nuclear magnetic resonance, particle tracking, imaging, and granular systems science.
The role focuses on advancing magnetic resonance technology and methods for studying granular systems made up of arbitrarily shaped and soft particles. The doctoral researcher will work on principles of particle tracking and imaging, develop new methods, implement them on magnetic resonance equipment, and explore these approaches experimentally in granular systems. The project also involves close collaboration with another doctoral student at ETH Zurich in process engineering, including the fabrication of tailored and soft particles and the design of experimental setups.
Applicants should have a Master’s degree in Physics, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related program with substantial physics and mathematics content. Strong English skills are required. Prior experience in magnetic resonance or granular systems is helpful but not mandatory. The ideal candidate is analytically strong, intellectually rigorous, creative, motivated by both theory and practice, and comfortable working in a team.
The position offers an opportunity to do leading research in a dynamic academic environment with excellent infrastructure and a competitive salary. Applications must be submitted online and should include a short motivation letter, CV, Bachelor and Master transcripts, and the names of two reference providers. For questions about the position, contact Klaas Prüssmann at [email protected]. Apply via the ETH Zurich portal; email or postal applications are not accepted.
