About this position

This fully funded PhD position at Chalmers University of Technology focuses on developing nonlinear power-efficient transmit array architectures. The research addresses limitations in current transmitters regarding bandwidth, energy efficiency, and linearity by exploring innovative approaches at the intersection of antenna design, circuit design, and signal processing. The project leverages antenna mutual coupling for effective amplitude modulation, aiming to overcome traditional challenges and foster sustainable digital transformation.

The position is hosted by the Microwave Electronics Laboratory at MC2, providing access to state-of-the-art MMIC foundry processes and world-class measurement infrastructure. You will join a vibrant research environment with five other PhD students working in related areas, offering ample opportunities for collaboration and peer learning. The research involves designing microwave components such as power amplifiers and antenna arrays, as well as developing theoretical models for energy-efficient transmission. The goal is to create a scalable transmitter architecture that utilizes mutual antenna coupling for load modulation, enabling efficient signal creation similar to classical Chireix outphasing but using the antenna aperture as the combining element.

Facilities include the Kollberg lab, renowned for its advanced microwave measurement capabilities. The project benefits from collaboration agreements with semiconductor manufacturers, allowing fabrication in CMOS, GaAs, and GaN processes. As a doctoral student, you will pursue both coursework and research, develop scientific concepts, and communicate your findings at international conferences and in high-impact journals. The position typically includes 20% departmental work, mainly teaching duties, and is limited to a maximum of five years.

Applicants must hold a master's degree (or a 4-year bachelor's degree for non-Swedish education) in Electrical Engineering, Communication Engineering, Engineering Physics, Computer Engineering, or a related field, with a strong background in electronic circuit design. Proficiency in English, both written and verbal, is required. Experience in integrated and high-frequency circuit design, antennas, wireless communication systems engineering, analog circuit design, advanced courses in microwave circuit design and signal processing, and familiarity with tools such as Cadence Virtuoso, MWO, Keysight ADS, SPICE, Matlab, as well as high-frequency RF and measurement equipment, will strengthen your application. Physical presence throughout the study period and a valid residence permit by the start date are mandatory.
