About this position
Chalmers University of Technology invites applications for a fully funded doctoral student position in sustainable sinter-based additive manufacturing of components for high performance applications. The position is based in the Department of Mechanical Engineering, within the Division of Materials and Manufacture, which conducts cutting-edge research across the full value chain from materials design and processing to advanced manufacturing and characterisation, with a strong emphasis on metallic systems. The research is closely linked to the national competence centre CAM2 (Centre for Additive Manufacturing – Metal), offering unique academy-industry collaboration focused on material development for powder-based metal additive manufacturing technologies.
The project aims to advance high-resolution metal additive manufacturing of advanced components using lithography-based metal manufacturing (LMM) and lithography-based high-resolution multi-material additive manufacturing (LCMM). Research topics include material and process development for LMM and LCMM, debinding, sintering, simulation, and advanced characterisation. The doctoral student will join a vibrant research group working on novel materials for hydrogen applications enabled by sustainable sinter-based metal AM, multi-materials for electromagnetic and battery applications, and advanced materials simulation and characterisation.
Applicants must hold a Master's degree (120 credits) or a Master’s degree (60 credits) in Materials Science, Chemistry, Mechanical Engineering, Materials Mechanics, Physics, or Production Engineering. For students educated outside Sweden, a 4-year Bachelor's degree is accepted. Strong written and verbal communication skills in English are mandatory. Experience in metal and ceramic additive manufacturing, metallic and ceramic materials, and inorganic chemistry is required. Additional experience in powder metallurgy, thermal analysis, organic and inorganic chemistry, CAD, metallurgy, sintering, sinter-based AM technologies, materials characterisation, and microscopy will strengthen the application. Personal competences such as collaboration skills are expected. Physical presence in Sweden is required throughout the study period, and a valid residence permit must be presented by the study start date.
The position is fully funded from the start, with a starting salary of 35,725 SEK per month (valid from May 1, 2026). The appointment is fixed-term for four years, with the possibility to extend up to five years with teaching duties. As a doctoral student at Chalmers, you are an employee and enjoy all employee benefits, including a dynamic and inspiring working environment in Gothenburg, generous parental leave, subsidized day care, free schools, and healthcare. Chalmers is committed to gender balance, equality, and inclusion, offering Swedish courses for non-native speakers.
To apply, submit your application in English as PDF files via the application form link. Include your CV, personal letter, motivation, and thesis with transcripts. Incomplete applications and applications sent by email will not be considered. References will be requested after the interview. The application deadline is 31 July, 2026. For questions, contact Professor Eduard Hryha ([email protected]), director of CAM2.
Chalmers University of Technology is a leading institution in technology and natural sciences, fostering innovation and global commitment. Join us to shape the future of sustainable metal additive manufacturing!
