Chalmers University of Technology is offering doctoral student positions in Data-Driven Product Realization within the Department of Mechanical Engineering, with a possible placement in the Department of Electrical Engineering depending on the candidate’s profile and research direction. The positions are tied to the major research and innovation initiative DRIVE PR, developed in close collaboration with Swedish industrial partners and connected to the Wingquist Laboratory.
The project focuses on transforming industrial product realisation from data-enabled workflows into truly data-driven engineering. Research themes include engineering design, simulation, AI, digital twins, manufacturing systems, communication infrastructure, decision support, geometry assurance, robust design, automation, and model-based development. Depending on the profile, candidates may work in one of the main Chalmers research environments: Geometry Assurance & Robust Design, Systems Engineering Design, or Automation. There is also a possible link to the SIJET project on model-based systems engineering for whole engine design with GKN.
Possible research directions include data-driven geometry assurance, tolerancing and variation simulation, automated generation of simulation models from CAD and lifecycle data, digital twins and digital threads for product realisation, data-driven robustness and feedback from manufacturing/inspection/repair/use, systems engineering and modular architectures, AI-supported decision support, synthetic data, hybrid modelling, digital infrastructure for connected engineering and manufacturing, and trustworthy human-in-the-loop industrial AI.
The positions are fully funded from the start. They are fixed-term doctoral appointments for four years, with the possibility to teach up to 20% of working hours, which can extend the appointment to five years. The starting salary is 35,725 SEK per month. Doctoral studies require physical presence throughout the study period, and a valid residence permit must be available by the study start date.
Applicants must hold a relevant master’s degree, or for students educated outside Sweden, a 4-year bachelor’s degree may be accepted. Strong English skills, research motivation, analytical ability, independence, and the ability to work across disciplines and with industry are important. Experience in modelling and simulation, CAD/CAE, tolerancing, geometry assurance, AI, machine learning, digital twins, model-based systems engineering, automation, control, sensing, communication systems, or manufacturing will strengthen the application. Swedish is considered a merit.

Funding details
Full funding including tuition fees and living expenses is available for this position. The scholarship covers all educational costs and provides a monthly stipend.
