About this position
EngD at Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e) in a project on making textile production more digital, circular, and scalable for SMEs. The position is embedded in a public-private field lab with TU/e, industry partners, design researchers, and the Dutch Textile Campus, and it focuses on using data-driven methods to improve how used garments are assessed and routed through the textile value chain.
The trainee will work on turning machine, production, and ecosystem data into actionable insights. A central part of the project is developing AI-based methods to assess used garments and determine their highest-value next life. This includes building labeled image datasets with repair and sorting partners, then training computer vision and machine learning models to classify damage, condition, and material. These assessments will be combined with product passport information, manufacturing and production data, partner capacity, and environmental impact to support decision models for repair, reuse, resale, remanufacturing, or recycling.
Beyond garment-level decisions, the project also examines ecosystem orchestration. The EngD trainee will explore how AI can help coordinate the textile value chain so that knowledge generated from used garments feeds back into design and manufacturing. The goal is to support better planning of production, repair, and recovery across companies and partners.
The role is highly collaborative and industry-facing. The student will work alongside manufacturers, designers, sorters, and repair specialists, learning how decisions are made in practice and translating that expertise into data models that can be trusted and used in real operational settings. The advert emphasizes close supervision, interdisciplinary work, and an international research and innovation environment at TU/e.
The position is based at TU/e in Eindhoven, within a university known for collaboration with high-tech industries and applied innovation.
