About this position
This research fellowship at the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s Center for Devices and Radiological Health (CDRH) focuses on ophthalmic devices and the regulatory science needed to evaluate them more effectively. The project centers on innovative eye-care technologies such as diagnostic retinal imagers, prostheses, lasers, intraocular lenses, and corneal cross-linking approaches, with an emphasis on improving how safety and performance are assessed for emerging devices and materials.
Fellows will contribute to research that addresses practical gaps in ophthalmic device evaluation, including standard methods for adaptive optics devices, clinical endpoints for fast therapeutic response detection, and safety profiles for new materials and treatments. The work spans biomarker development, model eye systems, optical coherence tomography test methods, prosthetic device assessment, nanoshell evaluation, and implant tools for next-generation intraocular lenses.
The training environment is highly applied and multidisciplinary, combining an optics laboratory with FDA-regulatory research. Participants gain hands-on experience in optical design and setup, instrumentation, data collection, analysis, bench testing, optical modeling, image acquisition and processing, and deep learning workflows. The fellowship also includes human subjects investigation activities, such as protocol development and revision, along with opportunities to present results at international conferences and prepare peer-reviewed publications.
The mentor team includes Daniel Hammer, Ilko Ilev, and Zhuolin Liu.
