About this position

PhD opportunity in biophysics, biology, physics, and computer science at the University of Groningen (Zernike Institute for Advanced Materials), in the Molecular Biophysics group.

The project, Revealing Selective Cellular Transport with Super-Resolution Microscopy, focuses on how cells control what enters and exits key compartments, using STED super-resolution microscopy, live-cell fluorescence microscopy, mammalian and yeast cell culture, automated experimental workflows, image/data analysis, and scientific programming.

This is a fully funded 4-year PhD position in the group of Prof. Rifka Vlijm, working in an interdisciplinary consortium with Prof. Patrick Onck, Liesbeth Veenhoff, and Cees Dekker. The research environment is the Faculty of Science and Engineering at a globally recognized university with strong links to nanoscience, nanotechnology, and medical technology.

Eligibility highlights: MSc in biophysics preferred; molecular biology, biotechnology/bioengineering, physics (optics), or equivalent may also qualify. Applicants should have a strong experimental background in microscopy, molecular biophysics/biology, or cell biology. Python programming and cell culture experience are advantageous. Fluent English is required.

Funding: salary of €3,059–€3,881 gross per month, 8.3% end-of-year bonus, 8% holiday allowance, 232 vacation hours per year, and professional development support.
