PhD opportunity at the University of East Anglia in Evolutionary Genomics of Mimicry in Neotropical Catfishes , hosted by the School of Biological Sciences and supervised by Dr Martin Taylor . This project explores how mimicry evolves in Neotropical Corydoradinae catfishes, using comparative and population genomics to study repeated origins of similar colour patterns across more than 30 mimicry communities in South America. The research asks which genomic regions show divergent selection, whethe...

PhD opportunity at the University of East Anglia in the School of Biological Sciences on Transgenerational Epigenetic Inheritance of Responses to Environmental Stress . This project investigates how environmental stress responses may be transmitted across generations through non-genetic / epigenetic inheritance . Using Caenorhabditis elegans as a model system, the research will examine whether key cellular stress responses can be inherited, whether this improves survival and fitness under stress...

PhD opportunity at the University of East Anglia in the School of Biological Sciences with Prof Alexei Maklakov. This project investigates postreproductive maternal care and how it may shape the evolution of sex differences in lifespan . Using wild nematode species, the research will test whether the sex that provides postreproductive care tends to live longer, combining comparative survival, reproduction, and provisioning data with custom genetic tools developed in the lab. Research themes incl...

Funded PhD project at The Francis Crick Institute with Dr George Kassiotis on evolution of novel function through retrotransposable element exaptation . The project sits at the intersection of genetics , genomics , bioinformatics , evolution , immunology , and cancer biology , focusing on how transposable elements (TEs) and retrotransposable elements (RTEs) are co-opted to create new gene functions, alternative isoforms, and disease-relevant regulatory changes. The research background highlights...

About this position

Cardiff University’s School of Biosciences is offering a fully funded PhD project within the MECAW and CAB research groups. The research will use genomics and movement ecology to investigate African felid evolution.

The project brings together Cardiff University with National Museums Scotland and the Landmark Foundation. The student will work across an interdisciplinary research environment involving evolutionary biology, wildlife movement and genomic approaches to understanding the history and diversification of African felids.

The supervisory team includes Dave Stanton at Cardiff University, Bool Smuts and Jeannine McManus at the Landmark Foundation, and Andrew Kitchener at National Museums Scotland. The collaboration connects university-based bioscience research with museum expertise and conservation-focused research partners.

This is a fully funded NERC GW4plus DLTP PhD project based at Cardiff University in the United Kingdom.
