About this position

ETH Zurich invites applications for a fully funded three-year doctoral position in the theory of quantum error correction, supervised by Joseph M. Renes and co-supervised by Renato Renner. The project investigates the fundamental limits of protecting quantum information from errors and is situated at the intersection of quantum information theory, quantum computing, quantum cryptography, and quantum foundations.

The doctoral student will conduct theoretical analysis and numerical experiments, develop algorithms and software, formulate independent research ideas, and communicate results through publications and presentations at leading conferences and journals. The position includes collaboration across the QuBriC Marie Skłodowska-Curie Doctoral Network, with secondments to Politecnico di Milano and Quantinuum in Cambridge, England, as well as teaching and departmental duties of up to 20% of full-time work.

Applicants need a Master's degree or equivalent in physics, mathematics, electrical engineering, computer science, or a closely related field. Useful preparation includes information theory, quantum information science, coding theory, error-correcting codes, decoding algorithms, strong programming skills, and excellent English communication. Applicants must not already hold a doctorate and must meet the network’s international mobility rule for Switzerland.

The position is based in Zurich, Switzerland, is fully funded for three years, and offers a starting salary of CHF 61,400 per year. The expected start date is early 2027. Apply online by 5 January 2027 with a merged PDF containing your CV, motivation statement, transcripts, and an academic writing sample.
