About this position

Swansea University is offering a fully funded PhD studentship in Advancing Sustainable Solar Solutions to Transform Global Energy Access, aligned with the UNESCO Chair in Sustainable Energy Technologies and the REACH-PSM project. This opportunity is ideal for candidates passionate about renewable energy, sustainability, and materials engineering, with a focus on developing innovative perovskite solar modules for deployment in underserved regions, particularly in Africa.

The project aims to accelerate the development of printable perovskite photovoltaics by focusing on sustainable materials, photochemical characterization, and lifecycle analysis. Students will work on optimizing materials for cost-effectiveness, efficiency, and adaptability to diverse environments, while also assessing environmental impacts and developing recycling processes for second-generation products. The research is highly interdisciplinary, integrating materials science, chemistry, environmental science, and physics, and is supported by a vibrant team of experts including Prof. Matthew Davies, Dr. Sarah-Jane Dunlop-Potts, and Prof. Trystan Watson.

Facilities at Swansea University’s Bay Campus provide access to state-of-the-art research equipment and a collaborative environment with global UNESCO Chair partners and REACH-PSM collaborators. The project supports the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals by fostering equitable and sustainable energy access through community-driven approaches.

Funding: The studentship covers full tuition fees and provides an annual stipend at the UKRI rate (£20,780 for 2025/26), plus up to £1,000 per year for research expenses. International students are not charged the fee difference between UK and international rates. Funding is for 3 years.

Eligibility: Applicants must have at least a 2.1 undergraduate degree (or equivalent) in Engineering or a relevant science discipline. English language proficiency (IELTS 6.5 overall, minimum 5.5 in each component or equivalent) is required. Up to 30% of the cohort can be international students. Some applicants may need ATAS clearance. Required documents include CV, degree certificates and transcripts, cover letter with personal statement, one reference, evidence of English proficiency, visa (if applicable), and confirmation of EDI form submission.

Application Process: Apply online via Swansea University, entering RS934 in the relevant sections and uploading all required documents. For questions, contact Prof Matthew Davies at [email protected]. The deadline for applications is 2 February 2026, with a project start date of 1 April 2026.
