About this position

The University of Basel in Switzerland is offering a fully funded, four-year PhD position in the Atmospheric Sciences group within the Department of Environmental Sciences. The project focuses on aerosol-phase synthesis and photocatalytic applications of metal and metal oxide nanoparticles for CO2 reduction.

The successful doctoral researcher will generate nanoparticles with different compositions in the gas phase and characterize them using advanced techniques, including transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), X-ray diffraction (XRD), UV-Vis spectroscopy, and infrared methods. The research will assess and optimize photocatalytic activity, particularly for converting CO2 into carbon monoxide, methane, and other products. Additional reactions may be studied using chromatography and mass spectrometry.

Applicants must hold a master's degree in chemistry, physics, environmental sciences, or a related discipline. Experience in catalysis or surface science is advantageous. Strong spoken and written English, excellent communication and teamwork skills, self-motivation, perseverance, creative problem-solving, and the ability to work independently are required.

The position is fully funded for four years, with salary and social benefits according to Swiss standards and University of Basel regulations. The starting date is February 2027 or later, subject to agreement. Applications will be reviewed from 1 December 2026 and remain open until the position is filled.

Applicants should submit a motivation letter, CV, and contact details for two references via the online recruiting platform. For further information, contact Professor Markus Kalberer.
