About this position
The University of Auckland’s Faculty of Engineering and Design is offering two fully funded PhD scholarships in Sustainable Energy Research, focusing on the advancement of battery technology to support global zero-carbon emission targets. These positions are part of the Sustainable Energy Research Group and are supervised by Dr. Shanghai Wei, Senior Lecturer in the Department of Chemical & Materials Engineering. The research projects will address both experimental and computational aspects of high-performance aqueous rechargeable batteries.
The first scholarship emphasizes experimental research, including the application of advanced in-situ and ex-situ characterisation techniques to investigate solid-electrolyte interphase (SEI) formation and evolution during battery charge/discharge cycles. The second scholarship is computationally focused, involving simulations of reaction interfaces and exploration of aqueous electrolyte components to understand their impact on battery performance.
These scholarships are funded by the Standard Marsden Fund and provide full tuition coverage, an annual NZ$35,000 tax-free stipend for three years, student services fees, and international health insurance. The projects offer opportunities for international collaboration, with additional supervision from the UoA School of Chemical Sciences, City University of Hong Kong, and the University of Canterbury.
Applicants should have a strong background in electrochemistry, materials chemistry, chemical engineering, or materials science and engineering. Experience with aqueous rechargeable batteries is essential. For the experimental position, in-situ characterisation skills are required; for the computational position, experience with computational simulation is necessary. All candidates should demonstrate strong data analysis and academic writing skills, and a motivation to innovate in battery technologies. The scholarships are open to both domestic and international students, and applicants from Māori or Pasifika communities are strongly encouraged to apply.
To apply, send your CV and a statement of interest to Dr. Shanghai Wei ([email protected]) by 15 February 2026. Shortlisted candidates will be invited to submit a formal PhD application to the University of Auckland. For more information, review the UoA entry requirements and visit the Sustainable Energy Research Group’s webpage.
The University of Auckland is New Zealand’s highest-ranked university, renowned for its research excellence and commitment to innovation and sustainability. The Faculty of Engineering and Design provides world-class research and education, preparing graduates to make a positive global impact in sustainable energy and battery technology.
