About this position
Uppsala University is recruiting one fully funded PhD student in Media and Communication Studies at the Department of Informatics and Media in Uppsala, Sweden. The four-year doctoral position is part of the Swedish Research Council-funded project AI Confidential: Emerging Forms of AI Chatbot Use for Emotional Support and Personal Well-being Among Young Swedes.
The project investigates how young people aged 15–18 interpret and relate to AI chatbots as conversational partners in personal areas of life, as well as the opportunities and challenges that healthcare providers encounter. The doctoral researcher will design and conduct empirical studies, collaborate with Youth Guidance Centres in Sweden's Västmanland Region, and work closely with the research team. Relevant interests include AI chatbots, emotional support, personal well-being, young people's living conditions, critical digital media studies, human-computer interaction, everyday automation, qualitative interviews, and surveys.
Applicants need a relevant Master's degree or equivalent qualifications and documented research experience, such as a Master's thesis. Experience with interviews and/or surveys is expected. Fluency in Swedish is required for qualitative interviews, together with excellent spoken and written English. Applicants should also demonstrate collaboration, initiative, independence, and critical and analytical thinking.
The application must contain a maximum-500-word cover letter, a two-page doctoral project plan in English covering theory, research questions, aims, data, methodology, and timeline, a CV with certified academic records and degree certificates, two recommendation letters, and relevant academic works. The application deadline is 13 November 2026. The position is full time, starts on 1 January 2027 or by agreement, and offers salary-based funding under a temporary doctoral employment contract.
