About this position

The University of Bristol is accepting applications for a funded PhD investigating how free fatty acids regulate beta-coronavirus infection.

Co-supervised by Christiane Berger-Schaffitzel, Andrew Davidson, Harriet Mears and Paul Verkade, the project will examine how free fatty acids influence coronavirus infection, replication and evolution. It builds on the discovery of a conserved fatty acid-binding pocket in the coronavirus spike protein.

The research combines structural biology, electron cryo-microscopy, cryo-electron tomography, molecular virology, advanced microscopy, biophysics and protein engineering. The goal is to address fundamental questions in virus biology and identify new opportunities for antiviral intervention.

PhD researchers will join a collaborative research team and have access to Bristol’s advanced imaging, cryo-EM and virology infrastructure. Applications are due by December 13, 2026.
