About this position

Applications are invited for a fully funded four-year PhD studentship in Immune Ageing at the University of Cambridge, based in the Cambridge Institute for Therapeutic Immunology and Infectious Disease (CITIID) within the Department of Medicine. This studentship is part of CG-AGE, a collaborative programme between Cambridge and GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) focused on the mechanisms and phenotypes of immune ageing.

The project will use multi-omic single-cell methods, longitudinal human immune data, vaccination challenge cohorts, and potentially machine learning/AI approaches to study how immune function changes with age. Research aims include characterising aged immune responses, tracking changes over time in an ageing population, and identifying how immune-age metrics relate to vaccine protection and clinical outcomes. Students may combine wet-lab work on aged samples and immune organoid models with dry-lab computational analysis.

This opportunity is especially relevant for candidates interested in immunology, infectious disease, cell biology, bioinformatics, computational biology, and single-cell multi-omics. The programme includes close supervision, journal clubs, training sessions, poster presentations, seminars, and broader career development opportunities. Students will also be part of the wider CG-AGE collaboration and may have co-supervision from affiliated investigators.

Applicants should have or expect to obtain at least a UK 2:1 Honours degree (or equivalent) in a relevant subject. The advert highlights candidates from molecular biology or computational biology/informatics, and asks for strong motivation, teamwork, independence, and a passion for improving human health. Applicants must meet Cambridge minimum entry criteria. The studentship is open to eligible home-fee candidates and may also be available to overseas students who can secure support for the international fee difference via additional scholarships such as Cambridge Trust or Gates Cambridge.

The PhD starts on 1 October 2027, lasts four years, and includes tuition fees at the home rate plus an annual stipend. Apply via the University of Cambridge Postgraduate Admissions portal and quote reference RC51518. The deadline is 15 January 2027.
