About this position
This research opportunity at DEVCOM Army Research Laboratory is centered on the processing, structure, properties, and performance of high-performance fiber composite materials. The project emphasizes carbon-carbon composites and ultrahigh molecular weight (UHMWPE) fiber-reinforced composites, with hands-on work spanning processing of fibers and films through to performance evaluation.
The research is designed to connect how processing choices influence structures that evolve across length scales and, in turn, how those structures govern properties and performance. You will work with a wide set of characterization tools to study the materials, including spectroscopy and thermal analysis methods, as well as techniques that probe micro- to nano-scale behavior and interfaces. The goal is to build structure-property understanding that can ultimately be linked to response under high-rate impact conditions.
The opportunity sits within ARL’s Science of Extreme Materials (SEM) area and the broader Army Research Directorate, where research is directed toward science-based capabilities for the Army through laboratory research competencies and flagship programs. The environment is strongly applied, experimental, and materials-focused, with an emphasis on disruptive science and technology relevant to Army needs.
Two ARL advisors are listed for this opening: Kenneth Strawhecker and Travis Bogetti.
