About this position
The U.S. Army Combat Capabilities Development Command Army Research Laboratory (DEVCOM ARL) is seeking a postdoctoral researcher in its Integrated Photonics Branch within the Photonic, Electronic and Quantum Sciences Division. The project centers on photonic integrated circuit sensors for small molecules and proteins, with a strong emphasis on wearable electronics for continuous chemical and biological sensing.
The successful researcher will contribute to the development of wearable PIC-based sensing systems aimed at health diagnostics and continuous monitoring, with applications in sports medicine, performance, safety, and broader health-related sensing. The work combines photonic sensing with integrated electronics and focuses on prototype and deployable system development.
Research activities include recognition element integration, microfluidics, circuit design, and computer interfacing, along with characterization and optimization of films and components for sensing performance. The position also involves work on surface modifications and polymer deposition, and offers the opportunity to develop hands-on expertise in silicon photonics and prototyping in collaboration with ARL researchers and other DoD institutions.
The broader laboratory environment at ARL is oriented toward disruptive science and technology, with research conducted across multiple foundational competencies and a strong culture of collaboration and transition of science-enabled capabilities.
