About this position

The International Max Planck Research School for Global Biogeochemical Cycles (IMPRS-gBGC) is a doctoral programme at the Max Planck Institute for Biogeochemistry in Jena, offered in cooperation with Friedrich Schiller University Jena. It focuses on the fundamental processes that move carbon, oxygen and nitrogen between land, ocean and atmosphere, and on how these cycles respond to climate change and human activity.

PhD researchers join an international, structured research environment and work on projects spanning field observations, method development, experiments and modelling. Depending on the project, research can involve topics such as geobiology, soil processes, atmospheric measurements, transport modelling, remote sensing, data integration, ecosystem fluxes, isotope methods, biodiversity, and palaeo-environmental studies. The programme is designed to build both deep specialist knowledge and broad interdisciplinary training in Earth System Science.

Alongside the thesis project, candidates follow an additional curriculum with courses, skills training, summer schools, workshops, short research visits, and outreach activities. The programme also includes regular progress assessment through a PhD advisory committee and support for career planning within a collaborative research setting.
