About this position

The IRI THESys Graduate Programme at Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin invites doctoral applicants to join a structured research environment focused on the transformations of human-environment systems. The programme is based in Berlin and is developed in cooperation with leading research partners including the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research, the Leibniz Institute of Agricultural Development in Transition Economies, the Leibniz Institute of Freshwater Ecology and Inland Fisheries, the Leibniz Centre for Agricultural Landscape Research, and the Research Institute for Sustainability at GFZ.

Research in the programme examines how climate change reshapes human-environment relations, with particular attention to the links between land use and water/energy use and governance. The described research areas include food-fuel-fibre production, resource extraction, biodiversity management, and the relationships between urban centres and their regional and global hinterlands through technical, economic, and regulatory infrastructures.

The programme is described as hybrid, with structured research, supervision, and research training/discussion. It is situated within an interdisciplinary setting that connects environmental, agricultural, and sustainability research across university and institute partners.

The programme highlights support services for international students and doctoral candidates through the university and Humboldt Graduate School.
