About this position
This PhD project is part of EDI-MSK, a European Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions Doctoral Network focused on making musculoskeletal modelling more inclusive, personalised and clinically relevant. The project addresses an important challenge in musculoskeletal health: understanding how diversity, bias, and biological variation should be reflected in next-generation models of bone and related tissues.
The specific doctoral project (DC6) aims to develop multiscale models of how chronic kidney disease affects bone healing and remodelling. You will work on identifying the mechanisms by which uremic toxins influence bone regeneration through network models of cells and signalling pathways, then connect these biological effects with biomechanical models of healing and remodelling. The final goal is to build computational tools that can predict differences in fracture healing under realistic lower-limb conditions for patients with chronic kidney disease.
The project sits within a large interdisciplinary European consortium of 20 organisations across 10 countries, bringing together expertise in biomedical science, engineering, imaging, simulation, experimental work, and clinical research. As a doctoral candidate, you will join a cohort of researchers working across academia and industry, with collaboration spanning Maastricht University, other European universities, and the Society for In Silico Medicine.
At Maastricht University, the project is based in the Maastricht Centre for Systems Biology and Bioinformatics (MaCSBio). The centre is described as a research environment dedicated to understanding, simulating, and manipulating biological systems using advanced mathematical and computational methods, with current themes including systems biomedicine and computational neuroscience. You will work as part of a multidisciplinary team of modelling and simulation experts and musculoskeletal researchers, and you will also have supervision involvement from the University of Padua.
The role is strongly research-oriented and combines computational modelling, simulation, and interdisciplinary collaboration. It offers access to international training, advanced infrastructure, and a network designed to develop future leaders in musculoskeletal health research.
Funding details

What's required
Applicants must have a Master’s degree in Biomedical Engineering or equivalent. They should have research experience or a strong interest in bone healing, modelling and simulation, and co-morbidities, plus flexibility to travel throughout Europe. Demonstrable training in mathematical or computational modelling of biological or physical systems is required, gained through coursework, a thesis, or a research project. Applicants should have experience with at least one scientific programming language such as Python, MATLAB, Julia, or C/C++. The research will be conducted in English, so proficiency above C1 level according to CEFR is required. Applicants must not yet have been awarded a doctorate degree, and must not have resided or carried out their main activity in the Netherlands for more than 12 months in the three years immediately prior to recruitment.
