About this position

Master thesis opportunity in chemistry or environmental sciences focused on the evaluation of analysis data from a laser (QCL) infrared imaging microscope for quantification of microplastics in ice core samples.

The project is hosted by the Helmholtz Association of German Research Centres and is connected to research on Arctic ice core samples from the MOSAiC expedition. You will compare datasets generated by two FTIR-based microscopes, with the aim of evaluating the accuracy of the newer QCL microscope and supporting microplastics quantification workflows.

Core work includes in silico analysis of large datasets, chemometrics, and statistics. The post highlights a preference for candidates who are currently enrolled at a university and who have basic knowledge of R and/or Python.

Supervision/contact persons are Dr Gunnar Gerdts and Dr Sebastian Primpke at the Alfred Wegener Institute, with applications requested by 30 November 2026. Interested applicants should send a cover letter with motivation and CV by email.

This is a master thesis placement rather than a PhD or postdoctoral opening. No funding details were explicitly stated in the post.
