About this position
Forschungszentrum Jülich GmbH offers a master’s thesis at the Institute of Climate and Energy Systems – Jülich System Analysis (ICE-2), in collaboration with TH Köln. The project examines how industrial biotechnologies could contribute to more sustainable and bio-based production routes in the chemical industry.
The thesis will investigate economic evaluation methods for industrial biotechnology production processes. The work includes identifying suitable methods, defining their objectives and framework conditions, and assessing their suitability for prospective analysis, including scenarios, forecasts, and regionalization where possible.
A central part of the project is the development of an integration approach combining economic evaluation with environmental assessment methods such as life cycle assessment. The resulting approach will then be applied to a specific industrial biotechnology production process within a research project.
The student will join an international and interdisciplinary research team working on innovative topics in climate, energy, sustainability, and technology assessment. The research environment provides access to advanced scientific equipment, modern technologies, experienced colleagues, structured onboarding, and opportunities to work independently while contributing to practical research relevant to technology developers, industry, and society.
