Swansea University invites applications for a fully-funded PhD to transform strain gauge manufacturing through advanced adhesive deposition and curing strategies. Strain gauges are vital in precision sensing, their accuracy hinging on precise adhesion and layering. Collaborating with Flintec—producing over six million strain gauges annually—this project aims to enhance sensor performance and sustainability in Industry 4.0. Based at the Welsh Centre for Printing and Coating (WCPC), a leading hub for materials science and printed electronics, the research will examine next-generation adhesive formulations, explore innovative curing methods (UV, thermal, and radiation-assisted), and develop scalable, low-energy manufacturing solutions.
The successful candidate will benefit from state-of-the-art facilities, industrial collaboration, and opportunities to present at international conferences and industry events, and receive hands-on training in advanced manufacturing techniques.
