About this position

This postdoctoral research associate position is based at the MRC Centre for Medical Mycology (MRC CMM) at the University of Exeter and is part of a newly funded five-year antifungal drug discovery programme. The programme is a collaboration between MRC CMM, the Dundee Drug Discovery Unit (DDU), and GSK Global Health Medicines R&D, forming a multidisciplinary team that covers all aspects of drug discovery up to candidate selection. The successful candidate will focus on two main areas: designing and constructing new bioluminescent and other reporter strains of human fungal pathogens to support the development of murine infection models for antifungal efficacy testing and in vitro screens; and contributing to the development, optimisation, and implementation of an automated workflow to determine drug susceptibility and resistance liabilities of novel antifungal drugs across a wide range of fungal pathogens.

This includes both in vitro and in vivo analyses, as well as supporting cross-profiling of hit and lead compounds against panels of human fungal pathogens. The role offers opportunities for career development, including continuing education, conference attendance, scientific publishing, and funding application development. Applicants should have experience culturing micro-organisms at containment level 2, measuring microbial growth, genetic engineering of pathogenic fungi (including Candida, Cryptococcus, and Aspergillus), and experience with murine infection models.
