About this position
POLY4EV is a Marie Skłodowska-Curie Doctoral Network coordinated through the University of Padova and involving a wide European consortium of universities, research institutes, and industrial partners. The network offers 15 PhD projects focused on designing innovative polymer materials that can improve the efficiency and sustainability of electric vehicles.
The research spans several connected themes: polymeric additives for EV lubricants, advanced thermal management materials, and polymeric binders for batteries. Doctoral Candidates will work on challenges such as friction control, viscosity modification, thermal exchange, phase-change materials, electrode processing, and battery anode materials. The programme combines polymer chemistry with materials science, physics, engineering, and computational modelling, linking fundamental research to industrially relevant applications.
Each project is hosted by a specific institution within the network, including the University of Padova, University of Pavia, University of Warwick, Imperial College London, Fraunhofer IWM, FORTH, Politecnico di Milano, Amethyst Lab, University of Lleida, POLYMAT, Infineum, UCLouvain, and the University of Manchester. The projects are designed to provide interdisciplinary training across academic and industrial settings, with secondments and complementary supervision from experts in polymer chemistry and physics, materials engineering, rheology, tribology, and modelling.
The individual projects cover topics from the molecular-level design of lubricant additives and simulations of polymer structure-function relationships to thermoresponsive polymers for cooling systems, sustainable core-shell particles for phase-change materials, and scalable polymer binders for lithium battery anodes. The network is intended to expose candidates to different research environments while building skills relevant to sustainable transport materials.
This is a collaborative doctoral training environment focused on polymer innovation for electric-vehicle technologies and on translating advanced materials research into practical industrial solutions.
