About this position

The International Max Planck Research School for Chemistry and Physics of Quantum Materials (IMPRS-CPQM) is offering multiple PhD positions in quantum materials research for 2027. This is a joint doctoral program involving the Max Planck Institute for Chemical Physics of Solids in Dresden, Technische Universität Dresden, and the University of St Andrews. The program brings together research in solid-state chemistry and condensed matter physics within a highly collaborative, international environment.

Successful PhD candidates will work on inter-institutional projects in the broadly defined field of quantum materials. Both experimental and theoretical projects are available, and students will also take part in graduate courses and general skills training. The program is designed to give doctoral researchers access to world-class scientists, excellent infrastructure, and facilities across the three participating institutions.

Funding is available and the positions are described as generously funded, with competitive payment based on the primary location of the research project. The opportunity is open to excellent candidates from any country. Applicants should have an outstanding Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in a field closely aligned with the research program, and the school emphasizes a friendly, supportive working atmosphere, equality, and inclusion.

The application deadline is 2026-11-30, and accepted candidates are expected to begin their projects no later than September 2027. Interested applicants should consult the official IMPRS-CPQM website for the full list of available projects, application instructions, and further details.
