About this position

This PhD project at the University of Southampton, within the EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training in Quantum Technology Engineering, focuses on developing an on-chip entangled photon source for quantum cryptography systems. The aim is to enable ultimate security in digital communications by leveraging the laws of quantum physics, addressing vulnerabilities in current encryption methods that are threatened by advances in quantum computing. The project will use two-dimensional materials as light sources for entangled photons, which are essential for quantum cryptography applications. Students will gain hands-on experience in fabricating on-chip photonic structures in a cleanroom environment, improving the emission of entangled photons, engineering integrated waveguides to manipulate photon polarization, and developing memory and sensing devices for quantum communication systems. The research involves designing, simulating, fabricating, and testing various photonic structures to create single photon sources. The successful candidate will join the Sustainable Electronic Technologies Group, a dynamic team within the School of Electronics and Computer Science, and have access to extensive experimental facilities. The project offers substantial training in scientific, technical, and commercial skills, preparing students for careers in both academia and industry. Applicants should have a background in Physics, Electronic Engineering, Chemistry, Materials Science, or a related discipline. UK students receive a competitive UKRI TechExpert stipend of approximately £31k per year for four years, with studentships also available for EU, Horizon Europe, and international students at the UKRI base rate. Overseas students with external funding are encouraged to apply. The university supports equality, diversity, and inclusivity, considers personal circumstances, and offers part-time study options. The application deadline is 31 July 2026, with an earlier deadline of 31 March 2026 for international applicants.
