About this position
Johannes Kepler University Linz is recruiting for its Surface Science group in Linz, Austria: one PhD position and one Postdoctoral Researcher position. The research focus is surface science, experimental physics, and the investigation of metal surfaces and thin molecular layers (especially organic molecules) using advanced surface-sensitive methods.
The PhD project is embedded in a thesis topic on the preparation and investigation of thin molecular layers on metal surfaces, with characterization of structural, electronic, and optical properties using scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and surface-sensitive optical spectroscopy. The postdoctoral role requires proven hands-on experience with LEED, PEEM, and SPM. For PhD applicants, experience with these techniques is highly advantageous.
Eligibility highlights include a Diploma/Master's degree in Physics, Chemistry, or Materials Science, strong knowledge of solid-state physics or materials science, and excellent English skills (B2 level). German language knowledge is appreciated but not mandatory. The position is a full-time, four-year employment at JKU Linz.
Funding details: the university states a minimum salary of €3,776.10 gross per month (14 times per year) under the collective agreement, job grade B1. This is a salaried academic position rather than a scholarship.
Application deadline: 30 June 2026. Interested candidates should apply through the JKU job portal using the official application link. For questions, contact O.Univ. Prof. DI Dr. Peter Zeppenfeld at [email protected].
