About this position

Ghent University, a leading European institution, is offering a PhD assistant position in the Department of Small Animals (DI09) within the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine. This role is designed for candidates passionate about small animal cardiology and veterinary medicine, with a strong interest in academic research and teaching. The successful applicant will dedicate at least 50% of their assignment to academic research in preparation for a doctoral (PhD) dissertation, contributing to the advancement of veterinary cardiology.

In addition to research, the position involves assisting in teaching clinical skills to master students, particularly in small animal cardiology. The role also includes supporting the department's internal and external services and participating in evening and weekend duties on a rotating schedule. This multifaceted position provides an excellent opportunity to gain experience in both research and teaching within a dynamic academic environment.

Applicants must hold a Master in Veterinary Medicine by the start of the appointment. Those with diplomas from outside the European Union must submit a certificate of equivalence (NARIC). Advanced training in small animal cardiology, such as completion of an ECVIM-ca/ACVIM-ca residency or possession of a specialist diploma, is highly advantageous. Candidates should demonstrate excellent teaching and communication skills, and prior teaching experience or participation in additional training and conferences is recommended.

The appointment is for two years, with the possibility of renewal twice for two years each, subject to positive evaluations, up to a maximum of six years. Remuneration follows salary scale AAP3, and staff members benefit from extensive training opportunities, 36 days of paid leave, bicycle commuting reimbursement, ecocheques, and more. The earliest possible start date is January 1, 2026.

To apply, candidates must use the Ghent University e-recruitment system before the deadline of December 9, 2025. Required documents include a CV and study results (merged PDF), cover letter (PDF), diploma transcript, and, if applicable, a certificate of equivalence. For foreign diplomas in languages other than Dutch, French, German, or English, a translation must be provided. Late or non-online applications will not be considered.
