About this position
The Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) invites applications for a full-time PhD Candidate position in Consequences of Drone Attacks at the Department of Structural Engineering in Trondheim, Norway. The project is part of “Managing drone threats to critical infrastructure” and the wider NTNU initiative A More Resilient Society.
The research will investigate contact charges, near-field explosions, and fragmentation from detonating drones, with the aim of understanding damage to people, buildings, and critical infrastructure. The PhD candidate will develop and validate advanced numerical models through testing, modelling, simulation, representative datasets, sensitivity analysis, and calibration against controlled reference data. The work will be conducted within the SIMLab research group and may involve solid mechanics, non-linear finite element analysis, optical measurements, extreme-load modelling, fluid mechanics, and programming using Python, Fortran, CUDA, or similar tools.
Applicants should hold, or be completing, a relevant master's degree in structural engineering, mechanical engineering, or computational mechanics. The degree must include an independent project of at least 30 ECTS equivalent to a master's thesis. A master's degree must be completed and documented before starting and no later than 1 July 2027. A master's average of B or better, or equivalent academic performance, is normally required, along with fluent spoken and written English. Security clearance and compliance with Norwegian security and export-control requirements may be necessary.
The appointment lasts three years for doctoral work, with the possibility of up to one additional year of career-promoting work. The normal gross annual salary is NOK 580,000, subject to qualifications and seniority, with a 2% pension contribution. Applicants must gain admission to NTNU’s PhD programme in Engineering within three months of starting employment.
Applications must be submitted electronically through Jobbnorge by 20 November 2026. Required documents include Bachelor's and Master's transcripts and diplomas, CV, Master's thesis or draft, a 400-word motivation letter, relevant publications or research work, certificates where applicable, and contact details for three referees.
