About this position
NTNU is offering a 3-year PhD Candidate position in drainage-enhanced flow condensation in micro-structured surfaces at the Department of Energy and Process Engineering in Trondheim, Norway.
The project is part of the Horizon Europe Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions Doctoral Network SurPhase, which researches sustainable surface engineering and phase-change heat transfer for low-global-warming-potential refrigerants. The successful candidate will experimentally investigate droplet shedding, film breakup, flooding, heat-transfer coefficients, and pressure drop in ribbed and finned micro-structured surfaces during flow condensation.
Research will be conducted in NTNU's Thermal Two-Phase Flow Laboratory at the Gløshaugen campus, using advanced experimental equipment and techniques. The candidate will join an international research environment, collaborate with other doctoral candidates and industry partners, participate in network-wide training, and undertake academic and industrial secondments.
Applicants should hold a relevant Master's degree in mechanical engineering, thermal engineering, applied physics, or an equivalent discipline, with a Master's thesis or independent project of at least 30 ECTS. A B average or equivalent is normally required. Relevant preparation in fluid mechanics and heat transfer, experimental research experience, and programming skills in MATLAB, Python, or similar are essential. Experience with scientific imaging, infrared cameras, image processing, condensation, two-phase flow, or peer-reviewed publications is advantageous. Applicants must satisfy MSCA mobility requirements and be able to complete the planned secondments.
The position offers a gross salary normally starting at NOK 580,000 per year, subject to qualifications and seniority, plus employee benefits and pension arrangements. Employment is conditional on external funding and admission to NTNU's engineering PhD programme within three months of starting.
Apply electronically through Jobbnorge.no by 27 November 2026. Submit transcripts and diplomas, a CV, a one-page research statement, a qualifications document, and contact details for three referees.

What's required
Applicants must meet admission requirements for NTNU's Faculty doctoral programme and hold a relevant Master's degree in mechanical engineering, thermal engineering, applied physics, or an equivalent field, including a major independent project of at least 30 ECTS equivalent to a Master's thesis. Master's students may apply if the degree is obtained and documented before starting and no later than June 2027. Applicants must normally have a Master's average grade of B or better on the NTNU scale, or an equivalent academic foundation, though exceptionally suitable applicants with weaker grades may be considered based on relevant work experience or peer-reviewed publications. Applicants must have good spoken and written English, an academic background in fluid mechanics and heat transfer, good experimental experience, and programming experience in MATLAB, Python, or similar. Preferred qualifications include fluids and heat-transfer experiments using scientific imaging or infrared cameras, image processing, fundamentals in condensation and two-phase-flow heat transfer, and peer-reviewed journal writing. Applicants must not have resided or conducted their main activity in Norway for more than 12 months during the 36 months before recruitment and must be willing and able to undertake international academic and industrial secondments within the SurPhase network. Personal qualities sought include motivation, curiosity, independence, teamwork, flexibility, and resilience.
How to apply
Submit the application electronically through Jobbnorge.no by 27 November 2026. Include Bachelor's and Master's transcripts and diplomas, CV, a one-page research statement, a qualifications document addressing the position-specific and preferred criteria, and contact details for three referees.
