About this position
PhD Candidate in Interface-Resolved CFD for Boiling and Condensation on Engineered Surfaces
The Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) is recruiting a 3-year PhD Candidate in the Department of Energy and Process Engineering. The project is part of the Horizon Europe Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions Doctoral Network SurPhase, which investigates sustainable surface engineering and phase-change heat transfer for low-global-warming-potential refrigerants.
Based at the Thermal Two-Phase Flow Laboratory on NTNU's Gløshaugen campus in Trondheim, Norway, the candidate will develop advanced computational fluid dynamics models for boiling and condensation on engineered surfaces. Research will address interfacial transport, wetting, nucleation, liquid and vapour transport, dryout, flooding, heat and mass transfer, and the representation of surface characteristics in numerical simulations. Models will be implemented using commercial software and in-house numerical codes and validated against experimental evidence generated within the network.
The successful applicant will work with Professor Maria Fernandino and collaborate with doctoral candidates, postdoctoral researchers, academic partners and industrial organisations. Duties include developing diffuse- and sharp-interface models, contributing to publications and project reports, attending consortium training and meetings, and undertaking international academic and industrial secondments.
Applicants should hold, or be completing, a relevant Master's degree in mechanical engineering, aerospace engineering, applied mathematics, physics, applied physics or an equivalent field. A Master's thesis or independent project of at least 30 ECTS is required, together with a normally B-level academic average, English communication skills, a strong background in fluid mechanics and heat transfer, and programming experience in Matlab, Python, C or similar. Experience in CFD, numerical methods, interface-capturing, phase-change modelling, experimental validation, UDF coding, condensation or two-phase heat transfer is advantageous. MSCA mobility eligibility and willingness to complete the planned secondments are also required.
The gross salary is normally NOK 580,000 per year, subject to qualifications and seniority, with a 2% pension contribution deducted. The appointment lasts three years and is conditional on external funding and admission to NTNU's Engineering PhD programme. Applications must include degree transcripts and diplomas, a CV, a one-page research statement, a two-page qualifications document and details for three referees. The deadline is 27 November 2026.

What's required
Applicants must satisfy NTNU's admission requirements for the Faculty of Engineering doctoral programme. A relevant Master's degree in mechanical engineering, aerospace engineering, applied mathematics, physics, applied physics or an equivalent field is required, including a major independent project of at least 30 ECTS equivalent to a Master's thesis. Applicants may apply while completing a Master's degree, but it must be obtained and documented before starting and no later than June 2027. Applicants need a strong academic record, normally at least a B average on the NTNU scale or equivalent, and strong oral and written English skills. The project requires a strong background in fluid mechanics and heat transfer and good programming experience in Matlab, Python, C or similar. Preferred qualifications include CFD and numerical-methods experience, model verification and experimental validation, interface-capturing or diffuse-interface methods, phase-change modelling, UDF or user coding, condensation and two-phase-flow heat transfer, and peer-reviewed publications. Applicants must meet the MSCA mobility rule, not having resided or carried out their main activity in Norway for more than 12 months during the 36 months before recruitment, and must be willing and able to undertake international academic and industrial secondments within the SurPhase network.
How to apply
Apply electronically through Jobbnorge.no by 27 November 2026. Submit Bachelor's and Master's transcripts and diplomas, a CV, a one-page research statement, a qualifications document of no more than two pages addressing the position-specific and preferred criteria, and contact details for three relevant referees. All documents must be in English; additional documentation of foreign education may be required.
