About this position

Garvan Institute of Medical Research is seeking a domestic PhD candidate for a project on the immunogenomics of arthritic joint disease in the Masle-Farquhar Lab.

The candidate will apply genomic technologies and analytical pipelines available at the Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard to Garvan’s rapidly growing Arthritis Tissue Biobank. The research will analyse the world’s first single-cell, long-read sequencing dataset integrating transcriptomes, clonotypes, isoforms, and acquired mutations directly from diseased arthritic joints. Additional datasets include large-scale single-cell genetic analyses of hundreds of patients.

The project aims to improve understanding of rheumatoid, psoriatic, and osteoarthritis, including disease mechanisms, treatment resistance, and novel drug targets. Findings will contribute to Garvan’s established pipeline for developing and preclinically testing arthritis therapies.

The PhD is based at Garvan Institute of Medical Research in Sydney, Australia, with travel between Garvan and the Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard in Cambridge, United States. Funding includes an AUD 39,991 annual stipend for 3.5 years and a one-off AUD 25,000 Global Mobility Grant.

Applicants must be domestic candidates and provide a CV, transcripts, and a detailed, thoughtful, original cover letter. Applications close 11 November 2026 and will be reviewed as they arrive.
