About this position

The Department of Marketing at BI Norwegian Business School is inviting applications for a PhD Candidate in Marketing. The programme is designed to build strong theoretical knowledge and methodological competence for doctoral researchers, with a focus on producing high-quality academic work in marketing and related fields.

The department describes itself as a highly international research environment with publications in leading journals such as Journal of Consumer Research, Journal of Marketing, Journal of Marketing Research, and Marketing Science. Its doctoral graduates have gone on to positions at institutions and business schools including Bayes Business School, Grenoble Ecole de Management, Nanyang Technological University, and the University of Groningen.

Applicants should have a strong academic background in areas such as business, economics, psychology, and statistics. Eligible candidates must have completed, or be close to completing, a Master of Science degree with thesis work, a research master’s/M.Phil. degree, or an equivalent degree relevant to Marketing by early summer 2027. BI notes that an MBA does not meet the admission requirement. The school also states that it requires a two-year master’s programme and an average grade of B or above. Final-year MSc students are encouraged to apply.

The position is a four-year scholarship with a current value of NOK 623,200 per year (to be adjusted during 2027). The scholarship includes automatic membership in the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund and requires teaching duties equivalent to 25% of a full-time professor position. The PhD candidate’s workplace will be BI Norwegian Business School in Oslo, Norway.

Applicants must submit the required academic documentation, a 5–10 page original project proposal, CV, at least two letters of recommendation, and other supporting materials through the electronic application platform. TOEFL or IELTS is required unless an exemption or waiver applies; minimum acceptable scores are provided in the advertisement. All documents must be uploaded by the deadline, and late submissions will not be considered. Candidates may later be asked for additional information or an interview.

Application deadline: 1 December 2026.
