About this position

This PhD project at NTNU’s Department of Computer Science is part of the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions (MSCA) Doctoral Network CAPTURE, an international collaboration with academic, healthcare, and industry partners across Europe. The position is based in Gjøvik, Norway, within the Colourlab research environment, and focuses on advancing wireless capsule endoscopy (WCE) for gastrointestinal imaging.

The research explores how multispectral imaging can improve capsule endoscopy beyond the RGB camera setups commonly used today. The core challenge is to identify spectral bands that are most useful for detecting and classifying relevant gastrointestinal pathologies while respecting practical capsule constraints such as sensor size and power consumption. The project also investigates improved methods for pathology detection and visualisation using a multispectral approach.

Students will work on experimental verification of the selected spectral bands using an emulated capsule system. This includes using advanced hyperspectral equipment to measure target pathologies, building a custom endoscope for verification experiments, and carrying out tests at Innlandet Hospital Trust. The work sits at the intersection of computer vision, imaging technology, and medical applications, with strong links to clinically relevant research on inflammatory bowel disease and other gastrointestinal diseases.

As part of CAPTURE, the doctoral candidate will also take part in network-wide training, workshops, conferences, and research secondments, including stays at partner institutions in Greece and Spain. The role is full-time and designed to support research, publication, and doctoral training in an international, interdisciplinary setting.

What's required

Applicants must have solid experience with imaging or image processing, very good programming skills, excellent oral and written English, and meet admission requirements for the PhD Programme in Computer Science. A relevant master's degree in computer science, electrical engineering, imaging science or equivalent is required, with a major independent project of at least 30 ECTS equivalent to a master’s thesis. Candidates must have a strong academic background with an average grade of B or better on NTNU's scale, unless they can document exceptional suitability through relevant work experience or peer-reviewed publications. Master’s students may apply only if the degree will be completed and documented before starting. Applicants must not already hold a doctoral degree and must comply with the MSCA mobility rule; preference may be given to candidates with multi- or hyperspectral imaging, hardware/electronics, analytical and communication skills, and experience in international interdisciplinary work.

How to apply

Apply electronically via Jobbnorge.no. Upload transcripts and diplomas, CV, master’s thesis (or draft if recently submitted), a project outline of up to 1500 words/4 pages, a short motivation letter, relevant publications/work, certificates if any, and contact details for at least two referees. If your education was taken abroad, include documentation of scope and quality plus diploma supplement or HK-dir statement if available.
