About this position

This PhD position at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) is focused on experimental materials physics and nanotechnology, specifically within the project 'Nanoscale imaging of magnetic skyrmion dynamics in thin film devices' (NIMSKY). Magnetic skyrmions are nanoscale, stable magnetic quasiparticles that move under applied current, offering promise for future low-power computational devices. The project aims to generate and study these skyrmions by depositing nanostructured thin film materials and fabricating highly customizable in-situ chips using back etching techniques at NTNU NanoLab. These chips will be used for in-situ magnetic nanocharacterization at the Trondheim Node of NORTEM, Norway's national infrastructure for advanced Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM).

The ultimate goal is to perform in-operando TEM studies on functioning nanostructured skyrmion thin film devices. The PhD work involves extensive experimental research, including nano- and microfabrication in NTNU NanoLab's clean room and advanced TEM analysis, particularly using the state-of-the-art NORTEM ARM300CF microscope. The project is a collaboration between NTNU and SINTEF, funded by the Research Council of Norway, and aims to deepen understanding of magnetic skyrmion properties and behavior at the nanoscale under electric current.

The position offers training and access to cutting-edge instruments, career guidance, and a supportive, international research environment. The employment period is three years, with a gross annual salary of NOK 550,800 and favorable pension terms. Applicants must have a relevant master's degree, strong academic record, and experience in experimental physics, nanotechnology, or material science.

Preferred skills include transmission electron microscopy, clean room work, microfabrication, Python programming, and knowledge of solid state physics and magnetic materials. The application process requires submission of CV, transcripts, diplomas, motivation letter, publications, and referee contacts via Jobbnorge.no. NTNU values diversity and encourages applications from all backgrounds.

The position is based in Trondheim, a vibrant city known for its tech industry, cultural scene, and high quality of life.
