About this position

The Department of Chemical Engineering at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) invites applications for a PhD Candidate in Process Systems Engineering and Real-Time Optimization. This 3.5-year position is part of a Horizon Europe project and offers a unique opportunity to contribute to the development of advanced control structures and real-time optimization schemes for novel continuous bioprocesses. The successful candidate will join the vibrant Process Systems Engineering group at NTNU, working under the supervision of Professor Johannes Jäschke and co-supervision from Professor Engell at TU Dortmund.

The project aims to transfer a biotechnological batch process for producing a high-volume intermediate chemical to a continuous process, scaling it up to a semi-industrial continuous fermentation process. The PhD candidate will develop a simplified, control-oriented dynamic process model, propose and analyze control structures, and approximate complex steady-state models using machine-learning surrogates. These models will be used for real-time optimization to ensure optimal plant operation despite disturbances. Experimental validation will take place at a pilot facility outside Norway, with a 6-month mobility period abroad for pilot plant experiments.

Key duties include completing doctoral education, conducting high-quality research, publishing academic and popular science articles, participating in consortium meetings, and actively engaging in the Process Systems Engineering research group. International activities such as conferences and research stays at foreign institutions are encouraged, and teaching or service activities may be assigned by agreement.

Applicants must hold a relevant Master's degree in Process Systems Engineering, Process Control, or a closely related field, equivalent to a five-year Norwegian course. Master students may apply if the degree is completed before starting. A strong academic background is required, with an average grade of B or better on NTNU's grading scale or equivalent. Experience in scientific computing languages (Julia, Python, Matlab, etc.) and good oral and written English skills are essential. Preferred qualifications include experience with computer-based work, practical lab work, first-principles modeling of (bio)processes, control structure design, real-time optimization, machine learning, AI, and knowledge of nonlinear optimization methods.

NTNU offers a strong and international professional environment, collaboration with top-level researchers, career guidance, an open and inclusive working environment, working capital for project implementation, a mentor program, favorable terms in the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund, and free Norwegian language training at a basic level. Diversity and inclusion are core values, and NTNU encourages applications from candidates of all backgrounds.

The position provides a gross salary of NOK 550,800 per annum, with a 2% statutory contribution to the State Pension Fund. Employment is conditional on external funding. The PhD candidate must gain admission to the PhD programme in Chemical Engineering within three months of employment and participate in an organized doctoral programme throughout the period.

Applications must be submitted electronically via Jobbnorge.no, including transcripts and diplomas for Bachelor's and Master's degrees, CV, a short motivation letter, names and contact information of three referees, and documentation of a completed Master's degree. All documents must be in English. The application deadline is 29th March 2026.

For further information, visit the application link or NTNU's doctoral programme page. The city of Trondheim offers a rich cultural scene, excellent welfare services, and opportunities for education, nature, and family life.
