About this position

The Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) invites applications for a PhD Candidate in Rock Engineering for New Hydropower Plants, based at the Department of Geosciences in Trondheim. This three-year position, with a possible one-year extension for teaching assistance, is part of the NRC-funded FME RenewHydro project, which began in January 2025. The successful candidate will join the Engineering Geology and Rock Mechanics research group and work closely with the RenewHydro Project team, supervised by Professor Krishna Kanta Panthi.

The project focuses on the design and construction of new hydropower plants, aiming to reduce construction costs, environmental impacts, and technical risks while improving operational capabilities. Research will address functional design for intakes, outlets, tunnel systems, powerhouse arrangements, and pump-turbine submergence, with an emphasis on long-term operation and maintenance. The work is interdisciplinary, involving review and development of design methods for tunnel systems and powerhouse caverns, investigation of minimum required rock stresses, and creation of new powerhouse arrangements from engineering geological perspectives. Additional topics include tailrace tunnel system arrangements, outlet structures, and fish-friendly pumping intakes, integrating civil, hydraulic, environmental, and engineering geology aspects.

Results will be discussed in workshops with industry experts and ranked using consensus-based criteria. Scientific outcomes are expected to be presented at international conferences and published in recognized journals. The PhD candidate will participate in the research group, contribute to teaching and MSc co-supervision, and engage in international activities.

Applicants must hold a relevant Master's degree in rock engineering, engineering geology, or a related field, with strong knowledge of hydropower underground structures. The degree must correspond to a five-year Norwegian course with 120 credits at master's level. Master students may apply if the degree is completed by 31 August 2026. A strong academic background is required, with an average grade of B or better (or equivalent to more than 80%). Candidates with weaker grades may be considered if they can document particular suitability for PhD education. Admission to the Doctoral Program of Faculty of Engineering is required within three months of employment. Good oral and written English skills are mandatory (IELTS 7 or TOEFL above 94), unless MSc was obtained at NTNU with thesis in English. Preferred criteria include experience with unlined/shotcrete lined high pressure water tunnels, underground caverns, hydraulic flow, and proficiency in QGIS, FLAC 3D, UDEC, 3DEC, RS2, RS3, PYTHON. Excellent presentation skills and knowledge of Norwegian are advantageous.

The position offers a gross salary of NOK 550,800 per annum, externally funded, with membership in the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund and access to employee benefits. Free Norwegian language training at a basic level is provided. NTNU values diversity and encourages applications from candidates of all backgrounds. The university is committed to equal opportunity and aims to increase the proportion of women in scientific positions.

Applications must be submitted electronically via Jobbnorge.no by 10 April 2026. Required documents include academic certificates, transcripts, diplomas, CV (max 4 pages), research proposal (2 pages), published articles or relevant research work, motivation letter (400 words), and names/contact information of three referees. If invited to interview, bring certified copies of certificates and diplomas. For questions about the position, contact Professor Krishna Kanta Panthi ([email protected]). For recruitment process inquiries, contact Eli Meistad ([email protected]).

Trondheim offers a vibrant cultural scene, excellent welfare services, and opportunities for education, nature, and family life. NTNU is a leading institution in technical and scientific education, dedicated to creating knowledge for a better world.
