About this position
PhD Doctoral Candidate (DC7) – HyNOISE
CIEMAT in Madrid, Spain, is recruiting a doctoral candidate to identify and model hydrodynamic and thermo-diffusive instabilities that drive combustion noise in turbulent hydrogen flames. The project forms part of the HyNOISE Horizon Europe Marie Skłodowska-Curie Doctoral Network, which develops predictive and control methods for quiet, stable hydrogen combustion systems.
The research will use high-fidelity direct numerical simulations of compressible Navier–Stokes and energy-species transport equations. The candidate will study sound generated when cellular hydrogen flames interact with counter-rotating vortices or walls, and will analyse the response of cellular flames to acoustic perturbations. Work includes simplified and detailed chemical kinetics, transport models, high-accuracy finite differencing and non-reflecting boundary conditions. The results will clarify how thermo-diffusive instabilities affect sound generation and hydrogen flame transfer functions.
The researcher will be employed for 36 months and will undertake secondments at CERFACS in France and NTNU in Norway. The package includes an MSCA living allowance, mobility allowance and family allowance where eligible, together with international training, conferences and consortium activities.
Applicants need an MSc or equivalent in aerospace engineering, mechanical engineering, physics or a related discipline, plus knowledge of fluid mechanics, thermodynamics, numerical analysis, simulation, modelling and CFD. Excellent English, teamwork, independence, problem-solving and willingness to travel are required. Laboratory combustion/fluid-mechanics and HPC experience are advantageous. Applicants must meet UC3M doctoral-enrolment requirements, the MSCA mobility rule and doctoral-candidate eligibility criteria.

What's required
Applicants must hold or be completing an MSc or equivalent in aerospace engineering, mechanical engineering, physics or a similar field; candidates cannot receive an employment contract before obtaining the master’s degree. Required skills include solid knowledge of fluid mechanics, thermodynamics, computer science, numerical analysis, simulation, optimisation, modelling tools and computational fluid dynamics. Applicants need excellent written and spoken English, strong communication and problem-solving abilities, the capacity to work independently and in interdisciplinary, multicultural teams, a proactive attitude, and readiness to travel for secondments and network events. Applicants must be eligible to enrol in the UC3M Fluid Mechanics doctoral school. Candidates of any nationality may apply, but must satisfy the Horizon Europe MSCA mobility rule and must not already hold a doctoral degree at recruitment. Experimental combustion or fluid-mechanics laboratory experience and high-performance-computing experience are desirable.
