About this position
PhD opportunity in hydrogen combustion, ignition, and thermoacoustics. The HyNOISE Doctoral Network is recruiting Doctoral Candidate DC4 for research on auto- and forced ignition in swirled stabilized flow configurations. The project focuses on understanding ignition dynamics, flame stabilization, flame extinction, and the interaction between turbulence, acoustic/pressure waves, and reactive flow processes in hydrogen-air combustion systems.
Research context. The work combines advanced large-eddy simulation (LES), Eulerian stochastic field combustion modelling, virtual chemistry / neural-network-based chemistry solving, and active flow control strategies. The research will investigate HYLON/SICCA ignition configurations, study the sensitivity of ignition probability and flame shape/position to excitation parameters, and contribute to the development of parametric ignition probability maps and control methods to enhance or suppress flame-flow interactions.
Training and collaboration. The candidate will work in an international doctoral network with academic and industrial partners, including major European gas turbine manufacturers. Secondments are planned at CNRS/EM2C Laboratory in France for experiments on SICCA and at the Technical University of Berlin for work on active/passive hydrogen flame control strategies. The project is designed to strengthen expertise in modelling, experiments, and combustion control across the network.
Host and location. The position is associated with the Polytechnic University of Bari, with work linked to the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering at Czestochowa University of Technology. The role is full-time, temporary, and runs for 36 months. The post is funded through Horizon Europe / MSCA Doctoral Networks.
Funding. A competitive MSCA salary is offered, including a living allowance, mobility allowance, and, where eligible, a family allowance. The listed amounts are gross and statutory deductions apply.
Eligibility highlights. Applicants need an MSc or equivalent in mechanical engineering, aerospace engineering, physics, or a related field, plus strong knowledge of fluid mechanics, thermodynamics, reactive flows, and CFD. At least one related scientific paper is required. Excellent English and willingness to travel are important. MSCA mobility and doctoral eligibility rules apply.
Application deadline. Applications must be submitted by 31 December 2026 at 23:59 CEST. Candidates should send one PDF by email to the address provided, using the required subject line and including all requested documents.

What's required
Applicants must hold an MSc degree or equivalent qualification recognized in Poland, with no nostrification needed, in mechanical engineering, aerospace engineering, physics, or a similar field. They should have solid knowledge of fluid mechanics, thermodynamics, reactive flows, numerical analysis, and CFD modelling/post-processing tools, and must have authored or co-authored at least one scientific paper in related areas. Strong English communication skills are required, along with the ability to work independently and in teams, solve complex problems under strict deadlines, show a proactive attitude, and be willing to travel for secondments and events. Desired skills include knowledge of Linux, Fortran, Python, and parallel programming/high-performance computing on CPU or GPU clusters. Applicants may apply before finishing the master’s degree, but the degree must be obtained before contract start. Candidates must satisfy the MSCA Mobility Rule and must not already hold a doctoral degree.
How to apply
Prepare one single PDF containing a cover letter, evidence-based CV, reference letters or referee contacts, and educational/professional certificates. Email the application to [email protected] with the subject line “Application for DC4 position” and keep the total attachment size under 30 MB. Apply before 31 December 2026 at 23:59 CEST.
