About this position

The University of Antwerp’s Faculty of Applied Engineering invites applications for a full-time doctoral scholarship holder position in industrial wastewater engineering.

The PhD project will investigate sustainable and innovative biological processes, with a specific focus on low dissolved oxygen biological nutrient removal from industrial wastewater. The exact research topic will be defined with Professor Jan Dries of the BioWAVE research group. The successful candidate will prepare and defend a PhD thesis, publish scientific articles, and undertake a limited number of teaching and research-support tasks within the Department of Chemical and Biochemical Engineering Technology and its bachelor’s and master’s programmes.

Applicants should hold, or expect to obtain before the start date, a master’s degree in biochemical engineering technology, bioscience engineering, or a related discipline. Excellent study results, fluent written and spoken English, and eligibility and willingness to submit a project proposal for an externally funded Research Foundation Flanders (FWO) doctoral fellowship are required. Experience with biological treatment processes and microbial analyses is recommended; collaboration with industry or other external partners is an advantage.

The scholarship lasts two years and may be renewed once for a further two years after a positive evaluation. The package includes a monthly doctoral scholarship, ecocheques, internet-connectivity support, and either a bicycle allowance or full reimbursement of public transport commuting costs. Most work will take place at Campus Groenenborger and the Blue Gate site in Antwerp, Belgium.

The planned start date is 1 February 2027, or as soon as possible thereafter. Apply online by 20 November 2026, midnight Brussels time, with a motivation letter, academic CV, and approximately one-page research plan. Selection interviews are scheduled for 1 December 2026.
