About this position

The University of Stavanger is offering a PhD Fellowship in Risk Management and Societal Safety at the Faculty of Science and Technology, Department of Safety, Economics and Planning. This position provides an excellent opportunity for academic development through a structured PhD program, leading to a doctoral degree. The successful candidate will join a dynamic research group focused on risk science, contributing to theoretical and methodological advancements in understanding, analyzing, describing, communicating, and managing risk across various domains and sectors.

The PhD program includes approximately six months of coursework, independent research culminating in a dissertation, participation in national and international research environments, academic communication, a trial lecture, and public defense. The appointment is for three years with exclusive research duties, or four years if combined with career-promoting work, to be clarified during recruitment. A personalized career plan and access to career guidance are provided throughout the doctoral education.

Research topics may include the development and operationalization of risk science concepts and principles, as well as methods for risk analysis and management. Applicants are required to submit a preliminary project proposal (maximum three pages) outlining the problem, relevance, and methodological approach. This proposal will be further developed with supervisors during the initial employment period.

Eligibility requires a five-year master’s degree in risk science (risk analysis, risk management) or equivalent qualifications, with both the master’s thesis and overall degree grades equivalent to or better than a B. Applicants with different grading systems must provide a conversion scale and Diploma Supplement. A strong background in probability and statistics is essential, along with motivation for research, the ability to work independently and collaboratively, creativity, and proficiency in English. International applicants must provide valid English test scores unless exempted by specific criteria.

The position offers a competitive salary (NOK 550,800 gross per year), automatic membership in the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund, favorable insurance and retirement benefits, relocation support, and free Norwegian language courses. Employees benefit from an inclusive workplace, access to health services, generous parental leave, guaranteed nursery places, and discounted public transport. The university values diversity and encourages applications from all backgrounds, with special consideration for women, applicants with disabilities, and those with gaps in their CV.

The Department of Safety, Economics and Planning is recognized for its active research environment in risk management, societal safety, industrial economics, and urban planning, with extensive interdisciplinary collaboration and international partnerships. The university is located in Stavanger, an international region offering diverse job opportunities, cultural experiences, and natural beauty.
