About this position
The University of Nottingham, in partnership with Nottingham Trent and the National Biofilms Innovation Centre (NBIC), is offering a fully funded four-year PhD studentship as part of the BBSRC DLA Programme. This CASE project focuses on harnessing genomics, ecology, and behavioural data to unravel flea acquisition pathways in UK companion animals, under the Biotechnology for Sustainable Growth theme and in collaboration with the European Scientific Counsel Companion Animal Parasites (ESCCAP) UK & Ireland.
Flea infestation is a major parasitic issue affecting millions of cats and dogs in the UK, with significant consequences for animal welfare and economic costs for pet owners and veterinary businesses. Environmental concerns are increasingly relevant, especially regarding chemical residues from flea control products entering aquatic systems. The project addresses a critical knowledge gap: understanding how, where, and from whom cats and dogs acquire flea infestations. This knowledge is essential for developing sustainable and effective parasite control strategies, especially as climate change alters flea ecology and transmission patterns.
No previous UK study has combined genomic analysis of flea populations with ecological sampling and owner behaviour data to map flea movement between wildlife, feral animals, and pets. This interdisciplinary project aims to provide a transformative evidence base for veterinary practice and public health, with direct relevance to One Health and the wildlife–domestic animal interface.
The successful candidate will receive training in genomics, veterinary parasitology, epidemiology, field ecology, DNA extraction, genomic library preparation, bioinformatics, population structure analysis, behavioural and ecological survey design, statistical modelling, GIS mapping, and data integration. The project offers extensive engagement with stakeholders, including veterinary practices, wildlife conservation groups, feral cat welfare organisations, veterinary authorities, and the companion animal industry. This environment will foster professional development and enhance the impact of the research.
Applicants should have or expect to obtain a first or upper-second UK honours degree (or equivalent international qualification) in Bioscience, Biochemistry, Microbiology, Biotechnology, Chemistry, Chemical/Biochemical/Process Engineering, Environmental Science, Pharmacy, Computer Science, Maths, or related disciplines. Candidates with a 2:2 or lower undergraduate degree may apply if they hold a relevant Masters degree or have three or more years of full-time relevant work experience. The programme is committed to equality, diversity, and inclusion, with a Guaranteed Interview Scheme for applicants from Black and Black mixed backgrounds who hold home fee status.
Funding covers UK tuition fees and an annual UKRI stipend (£20,780 for 2025/26 entry), available for four years from October 2026. Both UK and international candidates are eligible to apply.
To apply, visit the application page. For queries, contact [email protected]. The application deadline is 12 noon GMT on Monday 2 February 2026, with the programme starting in September 2026.
