About this position

PhD in Bioreactor-Based Preservation of Human Heart Valves at Eindhoven University of Technology in Eindhoven, Netherlands.

This four-year doctoral project will develop dynamic bioreactors that preserve human donor heart valves outside the body. The research will investigate extended ex vivo culture, valve homeostasis, flow and pressure conditions, mechanical stimulation, immune-cell responses, and immune-protective technologies. The goal is to support living cardiovascular tissues and improve treatments for children with congenital heart disease.

The project combines biomedical engineering, mechanical engineering, cardiovascular tissue engineering, mechanobiology, fluid dynamics, bioreactor design, sterile tissue culture, preclinical research, and advanced microscopy. The successful candidate will join the Soft Tissue Engineering and Mechanobiology group and collaborate with teams led by Marijn Peters and Carlijn Bouten, as well as researchers in mechanical engineering and cardiovascular biomechanics. The work is aligned with the BIOSHIELD consortium funded by the Dutch Heart Foundation.

Applicants need a master's degree or equivalent in Mechanical Engineering with biomedical affinity, Biomedical Engineering, or a comparable discipline. Cell and tissue culture experience is essential; experience in mechanobiology, bioreactors, or preclinical research is beneficial. Strong scientific communication, independent thinking, collaboration, multidisciplinary teamwork, and C1-level English are required.

The position is full time for four years, with at least 10% teaching and student supervision. Salary is €3,204–€4,051 gross per month under Dutch university employment conditions, plus holiday allowance, year-end bonus, pension, leave, professional development, and other benefits. Apply online with a cover letter, CV including publications, and three references. The deadline is 30 November 2026, although the vacancy may close earlier when filled.
