About this position

PhD position available in Cardiovascular Epigenetics at the University of Freiburg within the FOR6051 programme, The Interstitium: a Key Determinant of Cardiac Function.

The project (P6-2) is hosted at the Institute for Experimental and Clinical Pharmacology and Toxicology and is supervised by Achim Lother with a joint project involving Rémi Peyronnet. The research investigates how altered hemodynamics in heart failure and atrial fibrillation affect epigenetic regulation of gene expression, with a focus on mechanosensitive ion channels, cardiac remodeling, and arrhythmogenesis.

Research activities include translational cardiac disease models, pharmacology, molecular biology, wet-lab omics technologies, and bioinformatics. The project mentions in vivo experimental research, cell isolation, flow cytometry, transcriptomics, epigenetics, RNA-seq, ChIP-seq, ATAC-seq, and proteomics with bioinformatics analysis.

Eligible backgrounds include (molecular) medicine, biochemistry, (technical) biology, pharmacy, and bioinformatics. Applicants should have a strong motivation, a solid background in cardiac biology and/or epigenetics, and preferably prior bioinformatics experience. English proficiency at B2 or higher is required.

The application window is open until 07 June 2026. Applications are submitted via the SGBM portal under the FOR6051 track. Required documents include personal/contact details, bachelor and master transcripts/certificates, proof of English proficiency, contact details of two referees, and a motivation statement with research interests.
